A signet ring
Why wearing it?

I inherited my father’s signet ring and refrained from wearing it for a long time.
Firtsly, I didn’t want to be seen as a snob (which is a bit paradoxical: snob derives from “sine nobilitate” which is latin and means “without nobility”).
Secondly, I thought I did not deserve it. I kept telling myself: you will wear it the day you become proud of yourself, when you have achieved something solid, concrete.

I’ve recently read « The Elegance of the Hedgehog ». I was happy to realise that my perception of nobility matches that of the main character, ie the concierge: you are not noble by birth. Nobility is to do with your deeds, your interaction with the world, your attitude towards adversity.

No matter what your job is, if you do it well, conscentiously, dutifully, with all the respect due to your clients as well as yourself, then you can claim this “title”. Which is why I’ve decided to wear my signet ring from now on. It constantly reminds me, wherever I am and at any time, that I have principles, integrity, and that I have to abide by those principles. I believe that true nobility lies there.
